This 33-question research-based multiple-choice test is designed to evaluate students’ conceptual understanding of energy in algebra- or calculus-based introductory physics courses. The survey is based on investigations of students’ difficulties in energy and should be given in a 30-minute period. Statistical results have shown the survey to be reliable and valid. Details on the construction and analysis of the survey are available in L. Ding, Designing an Energy Assessment to Evaluate Student Understanding of Energy Topics, Ph.D. Dissertation, North Carolina State University, 2007, and L. Ding, R. Chabay, and B. Sherwood "How do students in an innovative principle-based mechanics course understand energy concepts?" Journal of Research in Science Teaching 2013, 50, (6), 722–747. This assessment is free for use by instructors in their classroom. However, as it takes years of development effort to create and validate reliable assessment instruments, the file is password-protected. They then take the time and device and determine the kilowatts of electricity used via an internet website. They then can take this value and calculate the amount of fuel that would have to be burned to generate this same amount of electricity. This multi-week project begins with a measurement of baseline consumptive behavior followed by three weeks of working to reduce the use of water, energy, high-impact foods, and other materials. The assignment uses an Excel spreadsheet that calculates direct energy and water use as well as indirect CO2 and water use associated with food consumption. After completing the project, students understand that they do indeed play a role in the big picture. They also learn that making small changes to their lifestyles is not difficult and they can easily reduce their personal impact on the environment.

This activity is designed to provide qualitative understanding of the Work-Energy Theorem. Students are expected to have read introductory material regarding the theorem, and are tested on this with a short online quiz prior to class. After a brief discussion a "warm-up" demonstration is conducted with student participation. A question is then posed regarding the height a "Hopper Popper" will reach if launched from a thumb instead of a hard flat surface. After initial responses are presented, discussion groups are formed to achieve consensus and provide justification of conclusions. Until recently, the total energy imparted to the oceans from the moon's gravitational pull has not been fully accounted for: about 30 percent had seemingly vanished without mathematical explanation. The total energy dissipating along the world's shallow areas and coasts don't add up to the expected total. However, data collected by the U.S./French satellite called TOPEX/Poseidon may provide the answer. Visualizations and remote imagery accompanied by text explain how the rough terrain of undersea mountains and ridges may dissipate the unaccounted-for energy.

The problems are presented with a qualitative question (usually multiple choice) that is carefully constructed to engage student difficulties with fundamental concepts. This is a long-term inquiry activity in which students investigate locations they believe harbor cellulose-digesting microbes, collect samples, isolate them on selective media, and screen them for cellulase activity. These novel microbes may be useful for the production of cellulosic ethanol. In the process they learn about plating techniques, serial dilutions, symbiotic relationships and enzyme specificity. This digital lab introduces the concept of how quantum mechanics and light relate with respect to the Hydrogen atom. The module revolves around the Hydrogen Atom Simulator, a Bohr model version of a idealized hydrogen atom as it interacts with photons of various wavelengths. Watch the electron jump to higher energy levels as it absorbs photons, then emit photon(s) and drop back to a lower level. Students can drag the electron between levels and shoot photons of different wavelength/frequency at the atom. The module also includes an instructor's manual, student guide, worksheets, and background information requisite to understanding the concepts. The Thermal Distribution histogram gives a temperature dependent plot of occupied states for many, many atoms. This is part of a collection of astronomy applets.

This multimedia lesson for Grades 7-8 features eight animations and a hands-on lab to explore the role of valence electrons in covalent bonding. The multimedia approach provides an opportunity to visualize the attractions between atoms that result in covalent bonds. The lab investigation uses a 9-volt battery, alligator clips, and pencils to show how electrical energy can break the covalent bonds in water molecules. Editor's Note: Covalent bonding occurs when electrons are shared between atoms; ionic bonding occurs when electrons are transferred between atoms. The processes are quite different. This module very effectively explores both formation and breaking of covalent bonds. Allow two class periods.

In this series of activities students investigate the effects of black carbon on snow and ice melt in the Arctic. The lesson begins with an activity that introduces students to the concept of thermal energy and how light and dark surfaces reflect and absorb radiant energy differently. To help quantify the relationship between carbon and ice melt, the wet lab activity has students create ice samples both with and without black carbon and then compare how they respond to radiant energy while considering implications for the Arctic.
