This Java applet game promotes mental math and strategic thinking skills using a card from Suntex's 24 Game. The player is presented with four numbers (1-9) on a card. The goal is to manipulate each of the four numbers only once so that the end result is 24. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and/or parentheses maybe used and the player must be able to enter the expression using the online calculator.

This activity lets you program your 'robot' (a willing friend) to pick up and dispose of some 'toxic waste' using as few commands as possible. Learners create command cards (Turn Left, Right, Forward 1, etc.), mark out a simulation area on the floor, and try to get the "robot" to dispose of something that serves as "toxic waste" into something that serves as a "containment vessel" - in as few steps as possible. Strategy, predication and cooperation are all part of this activity.

In this game, learners strategize to be the first player to make three in a row. This game is similar to the classic Tic-Tac-Toe game, but learners slide game pieces along lines, instead of filling in boxes with X's or O's. Learners will practice mathematical thinking skills like strategizing, predicting and problem solving. This activity guide contains sample questions to ask, literary connections, extensions, and alignment to local and national standards.

This activity (on pages 21-32 of PDF) has learners act out several classic brain teasers. Instead of moving checkers or pennies around on a table, learners play the role of the different pieces of the puzzle, and have to move themselves around. The lesson plan includes printable pictures of different characters than can be worn by the learners. Answers to the puzzles are provided so the facilitator can guide learners towards the solution.

This game is a part of the Tau Pack of the Kinetic City site (see description below). In this simulation, the patient's bodies are filled with bacteria. The object is to cure as many patients as possible. Learning concepts enforced here are that antibiotics are specific for the type of bacteria they treat, their strength, and that the bacteria may also become resistant to the bacteria by mutations.KINETIC CITY DESCRIPTION: "Kinetic City" (www.kineticcity.com) is a fun, Web-based after-school science club for kids, ages 8 through 11. It combines exciting online animations and activities with boxes of hands-on science experiments. Children earn "Kinetic City" power points and collect stickers as they complete missions and learn standards-based science content. Here's how it works: The "Kinetic City" super crew (Keisha, Curtis, Megan and Max) needs the help of Earth kids to save their planet Vearth, from the science-distorting computer virus Deep Delete. Each of Deep Delete's 60 hideous strains attacks a different area of science with disastrous consequences. After each attack, teams of Earth kids fight back by viewing a short online animation describing the situation on Vearth; performing a series of activities to re-learn the lost science and going on a mission to Vearth during which they answer science questions and gobble up Deep Delete viruses. Their scores appear on their own Kinetic City Club Web page. "Kinetic City" is produced by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), with a grant from the National Science Foundation. AAAS writes the "Project 2061 Benchmarks for Science Literacy," which forms the basis of most state science standards.

In this activity, learners create improbable looking structures using craft sticks and bamboo skewers. The three structures that learners construct include "Dancer on the Table" (a popsicle stick figure that can balance on one leg by itself), "Dancer on a Tack" (a popsicle stick figure that can spin on a tack), and "Spill the Beans" (a game in which two players take turns placing beans into a cup one by one until the cup tips over spilling the beans). Use these activities individually or as a set to introduce learners to the importance of center of gravity. Note: some tools are required for assembly.

In this interactive game, learners compare their music-listening skills with that of a three-month-old baby. This game challenges learners to listen to pairs of tunes and detect whether their rhythm or melody is the same or different. Three-month-old babies can recognize rhythms and a series of notes as a melody. They often hear subtle changes to melodies and rhythm that adults sometimes miss. Requires a computer with speakers or headphones.

This interactive Flash game gives students practice in identifying multiples of given numbers. Users choose two multiplication tables (from 2 to 9) and the number of examples/bees they want to try (from 4 to 34). The game displays the chosen number of bees with numbers on them; users identify whether each is a multiple of one factor or the other, both factors, or neither factor. At the end of a round players may check their answers. ["e" = "and" in Italian]

This online simulation game explores the different consequences of water levels on the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest. Learners play the role of dam operator, controlling how much water passes through the dam each season. First, learners choose whether it's a very dry or wet (or average) year and adjust the level of the reservoir in fall, winter, spring and summer. Learners see how their choices affect the migrating river salmon, power bills, recreation, agriculture, flooding, and fish that live in the reservoir. The results are compared to those of the real operators, and learners can print out a copy of your final report.

"Build It Yourself: Satellite!" is an online Flash game hosted on the James Webb Space Telescope website. The goal of the game is to explain the decision-making process of satellite design. The user can choose to build a "small," "medium," or "large" astronomy satellite. The user then selects science goals, wavelength, instruments, and optics. The satellite is then launched on the appropriate rocket (shown via an animation). Finally, the user is shown what their satellite might look like, as well as what kind of data it might collect, via examples from similar real-life satellites. Satellites range from small X-ray missions without optics (like the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer) to large missions with segmented mirrors (like the James Webb Space Telescope).

Learners describe objects in a room using only numbers and shapes. They can measure the object (like a desk) and make a list of facts about it (e.g. 21 inches tall, 42 inches wide, 3 different colors). Then other learners try to identify the objects described. When learners set up a free account at Kinetic City, they can answer bonus questions at the end of the activity as a quick assessment. As a larger assessment, learners can complete the Bug Blaster game after they've completed several activities.

In this activity, learners take on the role of a carbon atom and record which reservoirs in the carbon cycle they visit. Learners will compare and contrast their trip with those of other learners to discover information about sources and sinks, and residence times of the different reservoirs. Ocean processes are highlighted to allow the educator to define the biological pump and explain its importance to climate. Helping learners understand the carbon cycle is essential to their understanding of the causes and consequences of climate change.
