This is a computer-based activity in which students retrieve data from websites maintained by the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Weather Service (NWS), and then use that data to test different hypotheses regarding streamflow and precipitation. Students import data from web sites into a spreadsheet program where they can construct scatter plots and perform simple statistical tests. The activity has two components, the first focusing on relations between streamflow and drainage basin characteristics (drainage area, slope, precipitation), the second focusing on trends in annual precipitation at two locations in the USA: Burlington, VT, and Boulder, CO. As part of the second component, students conduct a statistical test to determine if the long-term trends in precipitation are significant.

That is, two bodies of masses µ and 1-µ moving in a circular rotation, and a third body of negligible mass moving in the same plane. The computation of these orbits is very sensible to small errors and are a good test for the accuracy of numerical methods for solving Ordinary Differential Equations. This simulation compares the solution of two of these orbits using both a 4th-order fixed step and a 5(4) variable step Runge-Kutta algorithm. The adaptive solver uses an event to find the period of the orbit and stop there. Both the computations of the adaptive solver and the event are done with the step size and the tolerance indicated. The Arenstorf Orbit JS Model was developed using the Easy Java Simulations (Ejs) version 5. It is distributed as a ready-to-run html page and requires only a browser with JavaScript support.

The EjsS Asset Exchange Model Package contains JavaScript models to investigate the the transfer of wealth in a simple economic model consisting of N buyers and sellers, known as agents, who spend their time buying and selling goods at a yard sale. In this economic model, two agents A and B are chosen at random and goods are exchanged. If the price of the item is correct, neither agent gains or looses wealth but this is uninteresting and unrealistic. In a realistic transaction an agent can either pay too much or get a bargain so that one agent becomes slightly richer while the other agent becomes poorer. What happens to the wealth of agent wA if this process is repeated many times and if we assume that the agent receiving the bargain is chosen at random so that sometimes agent A gains and sometimes agent A looses in the transaction. In other words, neither agent is always shrewd or always gullible so that all agents have an equal chance of getting rich. Does this model produce an equitable distribution of wealth? The EjsS Asset Exchange Model Package was developed using the Easy Java/JavaScript Simulations (EjsS) version 5 authoring tool. The Astronomical Parallax 2D Javascript Model illustrates This simulation illustrates the phenomenon of parallax in astronomy. Parallax is the apparent displacement of an object relative to the background that is caused by the motion of the observer (rather than the motion of the object itself, or of the background). This simulation illustrates the parallax of an object in space that results from the Earth's rotational or orbital motions. The simulation has two different modes. The default is an Earth Rotation Mode. In this mode the simulation illustrates the parallax caused by Earth's rotation on its axis. The other mode for the simulation is Earth Orbit Mode. In this mode the simulation illustrates the parallax caused by Earth's orbit around the Sun. Now the observer moves along Earth's orbital path (shown as a blue circle with the orange Sun in the center). The bottom window shows the apparent motion of the object being observed. The Astronomical Parallax 2D JS Model was developed using the Easy Java Simulations (EJS) version 5. It is distributed as a ready-to-run html page and requires only a browser with JavaScript support.
