This radio broadcast discusses the findings of a conservationist who flew over of most of the continent of Africa in a small plane at low altitude, photographing the ground below every 20 seconds, to form a grid map. The flyover was intended to evaluate human impacts on African ecosystems, including wildlife, vegetation, and soil. The researcher, Dr, Michael Fay, points out that humans have penetrated very deeply into every single ecosystem in Africa that was visited, exhausting soils, vegetation, and water systems. He also discusses the need for greater natural resource management to locate the places where humans have already exceeded what the ecosystem can sustain. The broadcast is 7 minutes and 45 seconds in length.

In this outdoor, warm weather activity, learners use sweepnets to search a grassy area such as a large lawn or field, collecting small animals to find as many different kinds of animals as possible. Learners observe and try to identify the animals they catch and observe how different animals interact with each other. Because some animals can't be caught easily with sweepnets, the Branching Out part of the activity involves making very small "pitfall traps" in the ground. At the end of the activity, learners release all the animals back into the grassy area.

This working paper, created by Denny A. Ellerman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explores the consequences of cap-and-trade policies, where the total air pollutant emissions of a whole set of polluters are limited, and they are allowed to trade among themselves for the right to pollute up to the cap. The paper focuses on whether these policies have been effective in addressing environmental problems. The article provides background on the policies of U.S. cap-and-trade programs and provides a policy analysis of the effectiveness of these programs.

Visitors to this expansive website would be wise to check out the "About Us" section to learn the complete definition of what herbaria briefly: "collections of preserved plant and fungal specimens and their associated data...concerned primarily with scientific research and documenting the vast diversity of plant and fungal life." The "About Us" section also explains how specimens are used and stored and it is a nice prelude to the rest of the site. Visitors will learn that a properly stored plant specimen can last centuries, such as the specimens collected by Joseph Banks on Captain Cook's 1770 voyage to Australia that the Herbarium holds. Since the Herbarium is not open to the public, the digitization of the Herbarium collections is important, particularly for botanists. Those persons interested in "Photographs of Plants" will find them under the "Botanical Information" category. There, visitors can search for plants by "genus", "species" or "family". It is noted how much of the digitization of each collection is complete. Visitors unfamiliar with botanical names of plants can find photographs using a "common name" database.

Background information is provided about gastropods (e.g. whelks), mollusks (e.g. clams, mussels, oysters), echinoderms (e.g. sea stars, sand dollars), and crustaceans (e.g. crabs). The activity is written for use in a science museum or aquarium, but could also be used anywhere you can set out the examples and have learners interact with them. You could even adapt the activity for exploring outdoors at a tide pool or similar place.

In this outdoor biology and math activity, learners estimate the size of a population of organisms too numerous to count. In a process similar to that used by real field biologists, learners count all the "organisms" (beans) scattered in a small, measured area known as a quadrat, then use that count as the basis for estimating the total population in the whole study site. Learners also examine sources of error while using this estimation technique.
