Twenty-eight lesson plans make up this research-based fourth- through sixth-grade fraction and decimal curriculum, covering through addition and subtraction of decimals, and multiplication and division of fractions. It includes a teacher guide with theoretical framework and instructions and templates for making manipulatives, as well as suggestions for using the lessons with English-language learners (ELL). The Rational Number Project is an NSF-funded multi-university research project.

In this 6-minute video Keith Phelps shows a lesson in which he has his fourth grade students decompose fractions to show one and a half in multiple ways. Students are given a variety of fraction tiles to complete this activity and are asked to build it, draw it, and write a number sentence for their solution. This activity requires students to study freeway exit signs and interpret the information presented by comparing distances and telling how far between exits. The activity includes four different exit signs, each including fractions, challenge questions as well as guiding questions to help students think about the real world application of these signs. This web page provides links to resources aligned to the CCSS that guide and support fifth grade mathematics teaching and learning. Tasks developed by the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service (MARS), Problems of the Month, (POM home page is cataloged separately) and videos of public lessons and number talks developed by the Noyce Foundation are included. The tasks were designed to measure students' ability to solve non-routine problems, explain and justify their solutions, and promote high level thinking skills. They include the scoring rubric, student responses, and discussion of student understanding and misconceptions. Resources are listed for specific grade 5 standards and are also organized by progression for an alternate search route.
