This web page provides links to resources aligned to the CCSS that guide and support first grade mathematics teaching and learning. Tasks developed by the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service (MARS) and Problems of the Month, (POM home page is cataloged separately) developed by the Noyce Foundation are included. The activities were designed to measure students' ability to solve non-routine problems, explain and justify their solutions, and promote high level thinking skills. Resources are listed for specific grade 1 standards and are also organized by progression for an alternate search route.

In this iOS app students use the Hands-On Equations method to balance equations and solve for one variable. This app includes three lessons, each with a short one to two minute video, two example problems, and ten exercises. At the first level students solve an equation that is already set up on the scale, in the second level students must set up the equation on the scale before solving, and in the third lesson students must take this one step forward and eliminate variables as they solve.

Insights Into Algebra 1: Teaching for Learning is an eight-part video, print, and Web-based professional development workshop for middle and high school teachers. Participants will explore strategies to improve the way they teach 16 topics found in most Algebra 1 programs. In each session, participants will view two half-hour videos that showcase effective strategies for teaching mathematical topics. Then, led by the workshop guide, participants will engage in activities designed to help them examine their teaching practice, incorporate what they are learning into their practice, share their experiences with other teachers, and reflect on their ongoing development.

This professional development video from Minnesota Department of Education presents an algebra training session in action. Viewers watch Dr. Terry Wyberg, a methods professor at the University of Minnesota; discuss strategies to help teachers to elicit mathematical understanding with their students with an example of multiplying by 10. He poses the question: “Why when you multiply by 10 do you just add a zero?” Through the use of base 10 blocks, he shows his audience how to develop relational reasoning or algebraic thinking to do the arithmetic.

This course shows teachers how to develop effective ways to use the five National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Process Standards to teach mathematics to all students at the K-2 level. The course materials are freely available online and include information, support materials, activities, video clips, and a forum for communicating with other participants nationwide. The course is designed as a professional development resource for pre-service and in-service elementary school teachers; teacher-leaders in schools and districts; professional developers; and other professionals involved in mathematics education. The materials may be used on your own, in a study group, or as a facilitated online course for graduate credit which is offered at a reasonable cost.
