In this three-part math activity, learners explore shapes. In part one, learners identify, describe, and classify two-dimensional shapes. Learners use square tiles to duplicate shapes on a card, identify 2D shapes in the room, sort shapes according to their attributes, and use shapes to creature pictures and stories. In part two, learners experiment with pattern blocks and decorate paper bag vests with shapes and patterns. In part three, learners are introduced to three-dimensional shapes as they use Geoblocks to explore geometric concepts.

Beyond Geometry, an online exhibition from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), showcases work created between 1945 and 1979 by 21 artists and 2 artists' collectives. The time period during which these works of art were created saw profound societal changes, as well as changes in the art world. The exhibition seeks to examine these changes as portrayed in the art. Visitors can approach the website in a variety of ways, including viewing works grouped in thematic sections, such as The Object Redefined, or The Problem of Painting; or browsing by artists' names or works. There are also brief biographies of all the artists, as well as video for some of the works - such as Gibi, 1972, a unique artist's book by Raymundo Colares - the video lets you see the pages turn.

The political and social upheaval that was pervasive throughout much of the world during the middle of the 20th century spawned a number of creative and innovative movements throughout various areas of human activity, including the visual arts. One such manifestation was the experimentation in visual forms that involved the use of radically simplified forms and systematic strategies. These developments are profiled in this nice online exhibit, created by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The very well-thought-out homepage of the exhibit contains brief introductions to each aspect of this movement (such as sections on the use of repetition and seriality), a timeline that offers information about the relevant developments within the movement across Europe, North America, and South America, and finally a glossary of terms. The course materials are freely available online and include information, support materials, activities, video clips, and a forum for communicating with other participants nationwide. The course is designed as a professional development resource for pre-service and in-service elementary school teachers; teacher-leaders in schools and districts; professional developers; and other professionals involved in mathematics education. The materials may be used on your own, in a study group, or as a facilitated online course for graduate credit which is offered at a reasonable cost.
