The Authoring Curricular Material Chapeter of the OSP User’s Guide describes Launcher and LaunchBuilder and shows how these programs are used to author, organize, and run Java-based curricular material. In order for most instructors to use OSP material in their courses (or in their educational, experimental, or theoretical research), the various physical models already available must be easily accessible, modifiable, and distributable. The paradigm for authoring, organizing, and running curricular material described in this Chapter uses the Launcher and LaunchBuilder programs to accomplish this goal.

This talk describes recent additions to Easy Java Simulations (EJS). EJS is a modeling and authoring tool that helps teachers and students create interactive simulations of physics processes. We show additions that help integrate EJS applets with on-line courses and laboratory activities. In particular, we show how to embed EJS generated applets into Moodle courses, including communication of the applet with the Moodle file repository and collaborative learning. We also show how EJS simulations can send and receive data to/from a number of laboratory equipment such as Arduino and Phidgets (and others to come). Finally, we show work in progress that reuses EJS architecture for tablets. This work will eventually help us quickly port existing EJS simulations at ComPADRE into tablets supporting Javascript and HTML5, such as the iPad and Android tablets.

This chapter from Volume 1 of "Research-Based Reform of University Physics" describes an interactive method of teaching, Investigative Science Learning Environment (ISLE), that helps students learn physics by engaging in processes that mirror the activities of physicists when they construct and apply knowledge. These processes involve observing, finding patterns, building and testing explanations of the patterns, and using multiple representations to reason about physical phenomena. ISLE is a comprehensive learning system that provides a general philosophy and specific activities that can be used in “lectures” (interactive meetings where students construct and test ideas), recitations (where students learn to represent them in multiple ways while solving problems), and labs (where students learn to design their own experiments to test hypotheses and solve practical problems). In ISLE, students are assessed for conceptual understanding, for problem-solving ability, and, most importantly, for their use of various scientific abilities. ISLE includes activities that help students acquire some of the abilities used by scientists in their work: experiment design, model building, use of multiple-representations, evaluation, etc. To determine the degree to which the students have acquired these abilities and to simultaneously provide feedback to the students, a set of rubrics are available that can be used by instructors for grading and by the students for self assessment. This chapter also provides a theoretical basis for the ISLE structure (using brain and cognitive research), explains how this learning system addresses the needs of the 21st century science education and workplace, and outlines how it is different from other reformed curricula.

The physics department at the University of Colorado, Boulder has recently begun the transformation of its Classical Mechanics/Math Methods course, a middle-division course taken primarily by sophomore physics majors. We discuss the process of course transformation, including holding faculty meetings to create consensus learning goals and a conceptual diagnostic, and adopting, adapting and creating course materials and structures. We also report preliminary observations of student learning gains, student attitudes towards the transformation, and common student difficulties with the course material. We also discuss ongoing plans for the course transformation.

This chapter from Volume 1 of "Research-Based Reform of University Physics" describes Matter & Interactions, a modern calculus-based introductory curriculum that emphasizes the power of fundamental principles, and guides students through the process of starting from these principles in analyzing physical systems, on both the macroscopic and the microscopic level. The continual emphasis on the application of fundamental principles and on the atomic nature of matter makes possible the integration of topics that are traditionally taught as disconnected: mechanics and thermal physics are intertwined, and electrostatics and circuits are analyzed using the same tools for both topics. The development of the curriculum has been shaped by research on learning and on research in physics education. The chapter from Volume 1 of "Research-Based Reform of University Physics" presents the background, design, and impact of Peer Instruction. Peer Instruction is an instructional strategy for engaging students during class through a structured questioning process that involves every student. Here we describe Peer Instruction (hereafter PI) and report data from more than ten years of teaching with PI in the calculus- and algebra-based introductory physics courses for non-majors at Harvard University, where this method was developed. Our results indicate increased student mastery of both conceptual reasoning and quantitative problem solving upon implementing PI. Gains in student understanding are greatest when the PI questioning strategy is accompanied by other strategies that increase student engagement, so that every element of the course serves to involve students actively. We also provide data on gains in student understanding and information about implementation obtained from a survey of almost four hundred instructors using PI at other institutions. We find that most of these instructors have had success using PI, and that their students understand basic mechanics concepts at the level characteristic of courses taught with interactive engagement methods. Finally, we provide a sample set of materials for teaching a class with PI, and provide information on the extensive resources available for teaching with PI.
