This 440-page report explores how students in pre-K through grade 8 learn mathematics, with a focus on number and operations, and recommends how teaching, curricula, and teacher education should change to improve mathematics learning. (A 39-page summary, Helping Children Learn Mathematics, is catalogued separately.) The authors identify five interdependent components of mathematical proficiency and describe how students develop this proficiency. The report presents a portrait of mathematics learning: research findings on what children know about numbers before they arrive in pre-K and the implications for instruction; details on the processes by which students acquire mathematical proficiency; what is known from research about teaching for mathematics proficiency and developing proficiency in teaching. The Bead on a Hyperbolic Tangent model computes the dynamics if a bead constrained to slide on a hyperbolic tangent shaped wire. The model uses an Euler algorithm to evolve the system and it displays the velocity, acceleration, and normal force vectors as the bead slides along the wire. Separate graphs show the energy and force components. The goal of this teaching model is to find the proper acceleration that will guide a particle along an arbitrary single valued function, y=f(x)--in other words, to simulate the classic "bead on a wire." Although there are many methods for doing this, the focus of this work to keep the theory and procedures within the realm of freshman physics. The origins of this work are from an ongoing effort to add computation, in the form of computer animation projects, to the freshman mechanics course. This work is descdribed in the American Journal of Physics (AJP) publication "Computational problems in introductory physics: lessons from a bead on a wire," by T. Bensky and M. Moelter. The Bead on a Hyperbolic Tangent model was developed using the Easy Java Simulations (EJS) modeling tool. It is distributed as a ready-to-run (compiled) Java archive. Double clicking the jar file will run the program if Java is installed.

There are five main standards each with a set of objectives, foundation knowledge statements, conceptual learning targets, and learning outcomes. The document also includes instructional guides for each of the standards and objectives to help teachers interpret and address the learning outcomes. These guides include common student difficulties and the content boundaries for each grade band, as well as example activities, questions, and problems.

We presently are experiencing historically rapid advances in science, technology, and education driven by a dramatic increase in computer use and power. In the past, educators were content to have undergraduates view scientific computation as black boxes (an abstraction of a device in which only its externally visible behavior is considered, not its implementation) and have them wait for graduate school to learn what's inside. Our increasing reliance on computers makes this less true today, and much less likely to be true in the future. To adjust to the growing importance of computing in all of science, Oregon State University's Physics Department now offers a four-year, research-rich curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in computational physics. The five computational courses developed for this program act as a bridge connecting physics with the computation, mathematics, and computational science communities.

This is the home web site for a book in computational physics. This product of the Strengthening Computation in Undergraduate Physics Programs (CPSUP) project contains flexible text materials that are tailored for use in programs using a variety of different hardware platforms and software packages. A listing is given of the chapters of the book with links to the full table of contents for the chapters. A much more detailed description of the history of this project and of the structure of CPSUP is also available. As this highly customizable text is difficult to publish through traditional means, the author is taking orders for customized assemblages of the materials, producing the required number of bound copies, and shipping them to the end user. Details of the procedure are given.

The concepts that underlie the fourth essential principle of climate literacy ("Climate varies over space and time through both natural and man-made processes.") are too complex for students in early and upper-level elementary school, but the foundational knowledge can be taught within existing curriculums and standards. This foundational knowledge will lead to understanding in later years. The author shows the correlation to the national science education standards, identifies misconceptions among elementary school students, suggests formative assessment probes, and identifies lessons and activities to make curriculum connections. The free, online magazine Beyond Weather and the Water Cycle is based on the seven essential principles of the climate sciences.
