The Authoring Curricular Material Chapeter of the OSP User’s Guide describes Launcher and LaunchBuilder and shows how these programs are used to author, organize, and run Java-based curricular material. In order for most instructors to use OSP material in their courses (or in their educational, experimental, or theoretical research), the various physical models already available must be easily accessible, modifiable, and distributable. The paradigm for authoring, organizing, and running curricular material described in this Chapter uses the Launcher and LaunchBuilder programs to accomplish this goal.

Computers are now widely used in many physics labs and classrooms for graphing, data analysis, timing, and temperature measurement. This paper presents some laboratory applications that are less widely used. Most of these applications require hardware to allow the computer to do voltage measurement. There are several types of devices that can accomplish this task, including analog-to-digital converter boards, voltage-to-frequency converters, and serial output analog-to-digital converter ICs that can connect to the game port. For some of the applications described, the voltage signal changes quickly and the voltage-input device must be capable of collecting data at a rapid rate. Some of the circuits described require +12 V and -12 V power supply lines. Others can operate off only a +5 V power supply lead. The AC control circuit is specific to the Apple II computer and requires no additional hardware.

As part of an effort to systematically improve our junior-level E&M I ...

As part of an effort to systematically improve our junior-level E&M I course, we have developed a tool to assess student conceptual learning of electrostatics at the upper division. Together with a group of physics faculty, we established a list of learning goals for the course that, with results from student observations and interviews, served as a guide in creating the Colorado Upper-Division Electrostatics (CUE) assessment. The result is a 17-question open-ended post-test diagnostic (with an optional 7-question pretest) and an accompanying grading rubric. We present measures of the validation and reliability of the instrument and grading rubric, plus results from 535 students in both standard and interactive-engagement courses across seven institutions as a baseline for the instrument. Overall, we find that the CUE is a valid and reliable measure, and the data herein are intended to be of use to researchers and faculty interested in using the CUE to measure student learning.

This multi-day project for Grades 9-12 immerses students in the basics of passive and active solar energy through hands-on explorations. The module opens with investigations of photovoltaic cells, angle of incidence, and color absorption. The remaining half is spent in the design, construction, and testing of a small-scale solar house that implements solar panel technology. The module provides full lab instructions, background information, question sets, pre-test and follow-up assessments, discussion questions, and printable student data tables. This resource is part of a larger collection created by teacher fellows of the Dayton Regional STEM Center. Modules were developed to promote integration of engineering practices into the K-12 science curriculum.

When education researchers describe newly developed curricular materials, they typically concentrate on the research base behind their design, and the efficacy of the final products, but do not highlight the initial stages of creating the actual materials. With the aim of providing useful information for faculty engaged in similar projects, we describe here our development of a set of in-class tutorials for advanced undergraduate electrodynamics students, and discuss factors that influenced their initial design and refinement. Among the obstacles to be overcome was the investigation of student difficulties within the short time frame of our project, and devising ways for students to engage in meaningful activities on advanced-level topics within a single 50-minute class period. We argue for a process that leverages faculty experience and classroom observations, and present several guidelines for tutorial development and implementation in upper-division physics classrooms.

Success in introductory college physics requires students to acquire not only the content knowledge of physics, but also the skills to solve problems using this knowledge. At the University of Minnesota, attempts are being made to teach problem solving successfully. One such attempt has an instructor explicitly teaching a strategy that emphasizes the qualitative analysis of a problem before the manipulation of equations. This class provides a unique case for examining the development of problem-solving skills. This interpretive case study will examine the development of the problem solving ability of students in two college introductory physics courses where cooperative-group problem solving was used. In one class there was an explicit problem-solving strategy used. In the other class, no additional attempt was made to teach problem solving. In general, the students in the course who were taught an explicit problem-solving strategy tended to develop their skills faster, but did not score any higher than the students in the more traditionally taught course by the end of the year. However, the students in the explicit problem-solving course consistently performed better on the multiple choice concept tests given during the year.
