The good folks at the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) are always on the lookout for mathematical principles in the least likely of places, and this gallery of "found math" is a tribute to their perspicacity. The exhibition includes prizewinners from the Joint Mathematics Meetings Exhibition of Mathematical Art and a weekly "found math" object. Visitors can make their way through items like simplex lamp shades over a bar in Venice and a butterfly in South American that appears to have an "88" on its wing. A number of the objects have more extensive explanations of their various mathematical nuances, and a few of the more recent additions lead to posters that can be downloaded for use in the classroom.

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) offers this textbook on factorization free on its Web site. This is the third and most recent edition of the book, published in 2002. Mainly suited for graduate level math students or other university researchers, it gives the prime factors of hundreds of numbers that fall into a characteristic form. The material is presented in massive tables, and detailed instructions with examples are given that describe how to use the tables. Individual chapters are bookmarked to make it easy to navigate. The main page of AMS Books Online lists many other references free for download.

Provided by Professor John A. Beachy of Northern Illinois University as a companion to two books he has written, it is designed as a handbook for students studying the topic. The site is accessible by chapter (twelve, including integers, polynomials, rings, and Galois Theory, among others), and by alphabetical indices of definitions and theorems. Note that the definitions include many symbols, represented as embedded .gif files.

American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC)

The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges was founded in 1974. It is the only organization exclusively devoted to providing a national forum for the improvement of mathematics instruction in the first two years of college. AMATYC has approximately 2,500 individual members and more than 100 institutional members in the United States and Canada. Educators in 47 states and one Canadian province are represented through AMATYC's 44 affiliate organizations. AMATYC provides professional development opportunities for educators interested in the first two years of collegiate mathematics instruction through an annual conference, summer institutes, traveling workshops, publications and projects. The American Mathematical Society (AMS) was founded in 1888 in order to further mathematical research and scholarship. Since that time, they have embarked on a number of outreach programs designed to educate the public about the importance of various mathematical endeavors. In the past several years, they have been developing the AMS Books Online website, and it's quite a resource. The works were all originally published by the AMS, and they can be browsed by author or subject. The subject headings include analysis, general interest, logic and foundations, and number theory. Users can download individual chapters from each book, and there are currently over thirty books available on the site. Visitors should make sure and check back, as there are plans to add books to the site periodically.

Base-Two Slide Rule

In this activity, students construct base-two slide rules that add and subtract base-2 exponents (log distances), in order to multiply and divide corresponding powers of two. Students use these slide rules to generate both log and antilog equations, learning to translate one in terms of the other. This is activity C1 in the "Far Out Math" educator's guide. Lessons in the guide include activities in which students measure,compare quantities as orders of magnitude, become familiar with scientific notation, and develop an understanding of exponents and logarithms using examples from NASA's GLAST mission. These are skills needed to understand the very large and very small quantities characteristic of astronomical observations. Note: In 2008, GLAST was renamed Fermi, for the physicist Enrico Fermi.

Bates College Online Resources for Calculus and Linear Algebra

Bates College in Maine has worked diligently to bring together this set of mathematical resources to the public, and it's a nice find. The materials here are drawn from four courses at the school: Math 105, Math 106, Math 205, and Math 206. The first couple of resources in each section contain past quizzes and exams from each course, complete with information on each topic. Additionally, each area contains drill problems, tutorials, and a fun "Find the Error!" feature. The topics covered here include linear algebra, quadric surfaces, functions, and abstract vector spaces. Moving on, the site also includes links to external sites from Harvey Mudd College and the University of California-Davis that address advanced math topics. For those persons interested in learning more about the mathematics department at Bates College, there's a link to its official website at the bottom of the page.

This algebra lesson helps students make the connection between functions and their graphs. The model of the level of water in a bathtub is used. Students will watch the graph and a chart of the depth of the water at different time increments. They are then asked to identify the events that caused each change in the graph.
