Published by the Brown Center on American Education at the Brookings Institution, this report asks the question: "How well are American students learning?" Released in December 2007, this most recent edition of the report examines the latest test score data on math and reaching achievement. The report also offers analyses of enrollment patterns in private and public schools as well as an international comparison of national math scores. Tom Loveless, the director of the Brown Center, authored the report and it covers a great deal of ground and provides in-depth analysis of these topics. Visitors should also note that the Brookings site also contains a press release, a presentation by Loveless and video clips from the launch event for the report.

The importance of afterschool programs have been linked to improved reading and math grades and a steady decline in drug, cigarette, and alcohol use by those who participate in such programs. The Afterschool Alliance was established in 2000 with funding provided by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. The website for the Alliance has a section on afterschool programs and the role they can play in learning and encouraging interest in STEM subjects. At the top right hand side of the "Afterschool & STEM" section, visitors can learn about the "curriculum," "allies," "funding," "research," "policy," and "resources" for STEM afterschool programs. There are almost a dozen resources for high quality activities, curricula, and programs, in the curriculum link, including "Thinkfinity" (free), "Design Squad" (free) and "FIRST Robotics." The "funding" link provides 11 sources of afterschool STEM funds from such companies as Honda, Intel and Motorola, as well as from a multitude of federal government agencies.

These pages will perform an analysis of covariance for k independent samples, where the individual samples, A, B, etc., represent k quantitative or categorical levels of the independent variable; DV = the dependent variable of interest; and CV = the concomitant variable whose effects one wishes to bring under statistical control. The pages in this first batch require the direct entry of data, item by item, and as they open you will be prompted to enter the size of the largest of your several samples. The pages in this second batch allow for the import of data from a spreadsheet via copy and paste procedures.

Annenberg/CPB, part of The Annenberg Foundation, develops multimedia resources to help teachers "increase their expertise in their fields and assist them in improving their teaching methods." This section of the Annenberg Teachers Lab features lessons on Shape and Space in Geometry. The website reviews the ways in which geometry is not abstract, but rather is "fun and colorful, instructive and practical." A background article explains how geometry is part of real life and why geometry is an important part of math education. The site offers several classroom activities, which are divided into two broad categories. The first set of activities is about shape and focus on identifying properties of various shapes and measuring their dimensions. The second set is about space and focus on moving objects in your imagination, and visualizing how things will look. An overview page for each set of activities discusses the rationale for the focus on shape and space, and reviews the NCTM Standards addressed through the activities.

Spurred by an orthopedic surgeon's report recommending how much weight a person should carry, teams of fifth and twelfth graders examined student backpack weights in relation to body weights in all three divisions of their school, weighing over 800 students and their backpacks and analyzing the data by gender, grade, and school division, using the Minitab statistics software package. The collaborative study includes rationale, hypotheses (predictions), methods (including explanation of boxplots), statistical results, analysis of the data, interviews (of administrators and nurse), and the student teams' recommendations for a healthy back. The site also offers related links about backpack weight and health concerns, and a "Backpack Rap."
