The RandomWalk1DContinuous program simulates a random walk in one dimension for steps of any length between 0 and 1. The default number of steps is N = 16 and the probability p of going to the right for a single step is 0.5. RandomWalk1DContinuous is part of a suite of Open Source Physics programs that model aspects of Statistical and Thermal Physics (STP). The program is distributed as a ready-to-run (compiled) Java archive. Double clicking the stp RandomWalk1DContinuous.jar file will run the program if Java is installed on your computer. Additional programs can be found by searching ComPADRE for Open Source Physics, STP, or Statistical and Thermal Physics.

The Point Charge Forces in One-Dimension model investigates the electric force that ...

The Point Charge Forces in One-Dimension model investigates the electric force that one charged particle exerts on another. The electric force is shown in three ways. First, particle 2 can be dragged left or right to sample the force at various locations - the force on each particle is shown with an arrow. Second, the numerical value of each force is shown in the table at the bottom. Third, you can check the box at the top of the menu to plot a graph of the electric force as a function of position. For the graph (and the numerical values), we define positive force as a force pointing to the right, and negative force as a force pointing to the left. The Point Charge Forces in One-Dimension was created using the Easy Java Simulations (EJS) modeling tool. It is distributed as a ready-to-run (compiled) Java archive. Double clicking the ejs_bu_Point_Charge_Force_1D.jar file will run the program if Java is installed.

The Point Charge Electric Field in 1D model investigates the electric field ...

The Point Charge Electric Field in 1D model investigates the electric field at various positions along a line, when there are either one or two charged particles on that line. The electric field is represented in two ways. First, there is a movable positive test charge that you can move along the line to sample the field at various locations - the direction of the force on that test charge is the same as the direction of the electric force on the test charge. The second way to represent the electric field is to plot a graph of the electric field as a function of position. For the graph, we define positive field as a field pointing to the right, and negative field as a field pointing to the left.

The STP 1DIsing program is a Monte Carlo simulation of a one-dimensional Ising model in equilibrium with a heat bath at temperature T using the Metropolis algorithm. The default is N=64 spins up (s = 1) with no external field with heat bath temperature T=1. The Introductory Physics 1D Motion Lab asks students to develop a computer model for a ball moving vertically under the influence of gravity. When the file is opened, it is initially programmed with a mass moving at constant velocity. It is assumed that students have first collected data of a basketball or volleyball bouncing under a motion detector. The lab instructions fully explain how to build the computer model using Easy Java Simulations modeling tool. The students will learn how to modify the model to simulate a bouncing ball, define variables, calculate relationships, and change the properties for plotting the graph. The calculus is done for the student. <i>Editor's Note: The Easy Java Simulation tool greatly reduces the amount of programming required to develop computer models. Exercises in student-generated modeling are becoming much more widespread in physics education because of the opportunities for students to test and apply their own prototypes to explain and predict physical phenomena.</i> This resource is distributed as a ready-to-run (compiled) Java archive. In order to modify the simulation (and see how it is designed), users must install the <i>Easy Java Simulations Modeling and Authoring Tool</i>. <b>SEE RELATED MATERIALS</b> for a link to install the EJS modeling tool.
