This interactive Java applet game has a user adding positive and negative integers to arrive at a sum of zero. Seven overlapping circles form a ring similar to a Venn diagram. Five blue numbers are in position when the game begins. The remaining nine numbers (from -6 through 7) must be placed in the empty spaces to produce a sum of zero in each circle. There is a unique solution for each puzzle. Instructions for users and teacher information are available through links at the top of the page.

In this 10-minute video Lynne McClure introduces NRICH's Magic Vs problem to a small group of teachers in a professional development setting. She demonstrates how a "Low Threshold, High Ceiling" problem, with minimal skill requirements, can be approached by nearly all learners, and yet can elicit sophisticated mathematical thinking. As Lynne leads participants through a sequence of challenges, she models good questioning and communication practices and discusses instructional strategies. The Magic V problem and a follow-up video are cataloged separately.

This 11-minute Flash presentation explains CCSS Mathematical Practice 61and illustrates how it applies in the K-5 classroom. It addresses Implications for classroom instruction such as the need to build vocabulary and comprehension skills, to teach a problem solving process and the need to try a new strategy if the first or second doesn't work the first time. Practical strategies for implementation and sample problems are included. A transcript of the audio is available for download (PDF).

This interactive Java learning tool allows a teacher to demonstrate and explore the distributive property with expressions in the factored form (a + b) (c + d) using a matrix multiplication method with students. Sliders determine the number values from 20 to -20 with increments of one-tenth. Check boxes show or hide the factored form, starting matrix values, matrix, products in the matrix, and solution.
