In this activity/demo, learners investigate biobarcodes, a nanomedical technology that allows for massively parallel testing that can assist with disease diagnosis. Learners define antibodies and learn how each antibody binds to a unique protein. Learners also discover how biobarcoding uses nanoparticles, antibodies, DNA and magnetism to detect diseases earlier than we could detect before. Learners assemble a jigsaw puzzle that models how biobarcodes work.

Biomimicry - Synthetic Gecko Tape through Nanomolding

In this activity/demo, learners examine a synthetic gecko tape with micron sized hairs that mimics the behavior of the gecko foot. The process is called "nanomolding." Also described in this guide is an easy setup for testing how much weight the gecko tape can hold using LEGOS. Note: it takes 45 minutes to make the gecko tape, which should be prepared 24 hours in advance.

Exploring Fabrication - Gummy Capsules

In this activity, learners make self-assembled polymer spheres. Learners discover that self-assembly is a process by which molecules and cells form themselves into functional structures, and that self-assembly is used to make nanocapsules that can deliver medication. This activity is a fun way to talk about the connections between science and cooking, since the gummy capsules produced in this activity are also used in molecular gastronomy.

Exploring Materials - Graphene

In this activity, learners investigate the properties of graphene and graphite. Learners use tape and graphite to make graphene and learn that graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb pattern. Learners test whether graphite is conductive by using graphite to complete a circuit and light up a light bulb. Notes: the graphite flakes are expensive, but should last a long time. Alternatively, you could try to peel a graphene layer from the pencil, instead of buying the graphite flakes. A pencil should still work, though the quality of the graphene layer will likely be lower.

In this activity, learners discover how a super-absorbing material can be used to move a straw. Learners discover that hydrogels can absorb a lot of water, like the one used in this activity, which can absorb 1,000 times its weight in water! Use this activity to discuss how hydrogels can be used at the nanoscale to manipulate tiny structures. Activities with Jell-O are a great complement to this activity, since Jell-O is also a hydrogel!

Exploring Materials - Nano Gold

In this activity, learners discover that nanoparticles of gold can appear red, orange or even blue. They learn that a material can act differently when it's nanometer-sized. Use this activity to explain how stained glass gets its different colors. Note: the cost for the materials in this activity is quite high. However, this is a one-time cost, since the nano gold is kept in vials at all time and thus should not be used up. SAFETY: Do not let visitors ingest the contents of the vials. Keep vials sealed shut. Use caution when handling the stained glass samples. Do not remove them from their protective case.
