Internet Scout Project

The Internet Scout Report provides evaluation and annotation of high-quality online resources, particularly those that will be of value to the education community. Each resource is selected, researched, and annotated by a team of professional librarians and subject-matter experts, who evaluate sites on the basis of their content, authority, upkeep, presentation, availability, and cost. Published since 1994, the Report is one of the internet's oldest and most respected publications. The Internet Scout Project is part of the College of Letters and Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

This two-page, Center for Disease Control brochure provides excellent summary information on what E. coli 0157:H7 is, why it is a problem, how it is spread, and includes information on symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. Available in HTML or ASCII text, this is a good introduction to the subject. Escherichia coli refers to a diverse family of hundreds of bacteria, many of which are permanent residents of human intestines, serving a beneficial purpose in digestion. The potentially deadly strain that has received recent publicity was first described in 1982, and is known as E. coli O157:H7. This strain of the bacteria produces a substance known as Vero-cytotoxin, which can cause severe illness, characterized by bloody diarrhea and occasional kidney failure in children and the elderly. Symptoms normally appear between three to six days after ingestion of the bacteria. Most illness associated with E. coli has been traced to eating undercooked, contaminated ground beef, although it can also be transmitted via person-to-person contact, by eating raw milk, contaminated vegetables or apple cider, and by swimming in or drinking sewage-contaminated water. The organism lives in the intestine of healthy cattle, and meat can become contaminated during slaughter. Because grinding mixes the bacteria into the product, ground meats represent a greater threat than do whole cuts. Contaminated meat looks and smells normal. Raw milk can be contaminated from bacteria present on a cow's udder. It appears that even small amounts of this organism can cause severe illness.

The Internet can serve as a communal gathering place, where like-minded community members can come together to discuss various pressing issues, share documents, take polls, and engage in the decision-making process as well. A recent project, GroupSpace, started at Stanford University as part of a research partnership with a local community organization, allows groups of individuals to do all of the above. As their mission statement suggests, the creation of the program is ̢ĺŰĺĎto support the type of deliberation critical to the functioning of smaller, informal organizations in civil society̢ĺŰĺ. It should be noted that this version of GroupSpace is a beta version.

Based at the Center for Democracy and Technology, Youth04 is an effort, mostly by college students, to "start a revolution in the role that 18 to 25-year-olds play in politics in America" by using Internet technologies and grassroots organizing. The goals are: 1) to create effective strategies for young voters to express their beliefs and values in election 2004; 2) to encourage candidates, their consultants, and the media to pay attention to young voters; and 3) to increase voter turnout among young voters. Visitors to the website can sign a petition, enter discussion groups (where some candidates have actually chimed in), and learn about ways to get involved and spread the word. A separate page is devoted to college professors with curricular suggestions.

For over 25 years, collector James Allen accumulated a disturbing but important visual legacy of racial violence in America: photos and postcards taken and sold as souvenirs at lynchings across the country. These photos were recently published in a book accompanied by a number of essays and then placed on display at the New York Historical Society. In addition, more information on Allen's photo collection and the exhibit is offered in a April 2000 report from National Public Radio's Morning Edition.

This audio resource site provides a radio segment from Ira Fladow's National Public Radio show Talk of the Nation, Science Friday (requires RealPlayer). The dinosaur heart segment of the show (which starts at time 21:28) features an in-depth interview with Dr. Dale Russell, director of the Center for the Exploration of the Dinosaurian World, on the ground-breaking discovery.

That is quite accurate, as this application does in fact allow users to download embedded videos from a wide range of systems and sites. Some might just want to pick up a bit of entertainment, while educators might be able to use certain embedded videos for illustrative purposes in the classroom. Either way, this version is compatible with computers running Windows 95 and newer, along with Firefox 1.5 through 2.0.

In 2012, it took only ten weeks for employers to reach the United States' cap on the H-1B visas they need to hire immigrant workers in speciality occupations. This situation presents a problem for certain industries, such as biotechnology, and this special presentation from the Brookings Institution's Metropolitan Policy Program brings together a set of policy experts to talk about this matter. The site includes videos from the July 18, 2012 session, complete with a discussion of the geography of H-1B workers and the political feasibility of amending the existing H-1B policy. The site also includes an uncorrected transcript of the proceedings, along with links to a working paper on the subject.
